Abstract
Application of Agile practices, especially Scrum and Kanban, in database administration has received increasing academic interest in recent years. Conventional database administration practices are usually marked by strict processes and lengthy development cycles, resulting in lower responsiveness and lower flexibility. Agile practices, on the other hand, emphasize iterative development, flexibility, and collaboration, and present a major benefit in responding to the constantly changing needs of contemporary database environments. Even with increasing software development adoption of Agile principles, application of Scrum and Kanban in database administration is still under-explored, particularly in understanding how they influence activities such as performance improvement, migration, refactoring, and maintenance. This paper is a review of the research gap in the application of Agile principles to database management, meta-analyzing research. The literature indicates that Agile practices such as Scrum’s iterative development and Kanban’s visual management of the workflow have been effective in improving database change management, team communication, and the speed of delivery of database features. There remain challenges such as resistance from DBAs who are used to traditional methods and the necessity for cultural changes in organizations. The paper also recognizes the necessity for more specialized research on Agile’s application in database performance tuning, security, and governance and also its integration with emerging technologies such as DevOps and cloud computing.
