Abstract
Mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) require robust, adaptive routing protocols to ensure efficient packet delivery under dynamic topologies and constrained resources. Among on-demand protocols, the Ad hoc On-Demand Distance Vector (AODV) and Dynamic Source Routing (DSR) are prominent, each employing distinct route discovery and maintenance mechanisms. This manuscript presents a comparative study of AODV and DSR, focusing on performance metrics—packet delivery ratio, end-to-end delay, routing overhead—and energy consumption under varying network sizes and mobility patterns. Two real-world case studies (vehicular platooning and emergency response scenarios) illustrate protocol behavior in practical settings. Methodology comprises ns-2 simulations with IEEE 802.11b MAC, random waypoint and Gauss–Markov mobility, and traffic loads of constant bit rate (CBR) streams. Results indicate AODV’s superior scalability and lower routing overhead in large networks, while DSR exhibits lower delay under low mobility and moderate network sizes. Conclusions highlight trade-offs and recommendations for protocol selection in engineering designs, emphasizing context-specific optimization.
