Abstract
The detection of faults in high-voltage transmission lines is critical to maintaining power system reliability and preventing equipment damage and service interruptions. Wavelet transform techniques have emerged as powerful tools for analyzing nonstationary signals associated with fault events, offering excellent time‐frequency localization and adaptability to multiresolution analysis. This manuscript reviews fault detection in transmission lines using discrete wavelet transform (DWT) methods applicable up to 2018, presents a statistical comparison of detection performance under different thresholding schemes, describes a methodology for implementation, reports experimental results, identifies research gaps, and concludes with recommendations for future work within the constraints of technologies available through 2018.
