ABSTRACT
Image compression has become an indispensable component in digital imaging systems, enabling efficient storage and transmission of large volumes of data. Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT)–based techniques have emerged as powerful tools for achieving high compression ratios while preserving perceptual quality. This manuscript reviews core DWT‐based image compression methods as of 2016, presents three engineering case studies demonstrating practical deployments, identifies prevailing research gaps, outlines a standardized methodology for evaluation, reports quantitative results in terms of compression ratio (CR) and peak‐signal‐to‐noise ratio (PSNR), and concludes with recommendations for future work. Ten key references from the literature up to 2016 are included. Total length: approx. 3100 words.
