Abstract
Relay coordination is a critical protection task for radial power distribution systems to ensure selectivity, reliability, and safety of power supply. Proper coordination minimizes outage impacts by isolating only the faulty section while maintaining service continuity to unaffected zones. This manuscript reviews classical and contemporary approaches to relay coordination for radial systems, emphasizing overcurrent relay coordination strategies, time grading methods, and optimization techniques prevalent until 2019. It proposes a systematic methodology combining conventional coordination principles with optimization algorithms for enhanced performance and minimal operating times. Simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed approach for typical radial distribution feeder configurations. The study contributes to engineering knowledge by presenting a comprehensive framework adhering to the state-of-the-art technologies available up to 2019.
