Abstract
This manuscript investigates methods for improving thermal efficiency in four-stroke diesel engines through turbocharging technologies available up to 2016. The study reviews thermodynamic principles governing diesel combustion, the role of turbocharger design parameters (such as turbine and compressor efficiencies, compressor maps, and matching), and intercooling strategies to reduce charge-air temperature. A structured methodology is presented, combining literature synthesis, analytical modeling, and comparison of case studies from heavy-duty and light-duty engine applications. Results demonstrate that optimized turbocharger matching and intercooler integration can enhance brake thermal efficiency by up to 6 percentage points under standardized test cycles. The findings underline practical guidelines for engine designers seeking efficiency improvements without adopting post-2016 advanced control systems.
