ABSTRACT
Assessment of pavement roughness is critical for evaluating road serviceability and user comfort. The bump integrator method, based on accelerometer measurements, offers a cost-effective and portable solution for roughness quantification. This manuscript presents a comprehensive study of the bump integrator method applied to asphalt and concrete pavements, incorporating two case studies on urban arterial roads and rural highways. Research gaps are identified regarding calibration procedures, sensor mounting effects, and environmental factors influencing measurements. A detailed methodology outlines sensor selection, data acquisition protocols, signal processing algorithms, and statistical analysis techniques aligned with 2017 engineering practices. Results demonstrate strong correlations between bump integrator indices and the International Roughness Index (IRI), with mean absolute errors below 10 % for both pavement types. Conclusions highlight the method’s practicality for routine surveys, while recommendations address identified gaps and propose standardization of calibration and data processing workflows. Ten references up to 2017 are provided in APA style.
