Abstract
Ensuring access to clean and safe water remains a critical global challenge, with over 2 billion people worldwide lacking reliably safe drinking water. Recent advances in nanotechnology offer transformative potential for water purification by exploiting the unique physicochemical properties of materials at the nanoscale. This manuscript presents a comprehensive overview of nanotechnology-based water purification systems developed up to 2022, encompassing photocatalytic nanomaterials (e.g., TiO₂ nanoparticles), carbon-based adsorbents (e.g., carbon nanotubes, graphene oxide membranes), metal‑oxide and zero‑valent iron nanoparticles, magnetic nanocomposites, and nanosilver. We conduct a meta‑analytical statistical analysis of reported removal efficiencies for key contaminants—organic dyes, heavy metals, and pathogenic microorganisms—demonstrating average efficiencies exceeding 90% under optimized laboratory conditions. Our methodology outlines standardized synthesis protocols, fabrication of nanostructured membranes, and batch adsorption and photocatalytic degradation experiments. Results indicate that while nanomaterials can achieve superior contaminant removal compared to conventional methods, challenges such as nanoparticle agglomeration, membrane fouling, regeneration and recovery, ecotoxicity, and high production costs hinder large‑scale deployment. We conclude by identifying critical gaps and proposing future research directions, including lifecycle assessments, scalable synthesis, hybrid systems integration, and real‑world pilot studies. This work aims to inform engineers, researchers, and policymakers seeking to harness nanotechnology for sustainable water treatment solutions.
